Longtime musical director of Parliament-Funkadelic and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Garry Shider died from cancer on June 16. He was 56.
The friendship and musical collaboration between Shider and George Clinton go back to the 1960s at a barbershop that Clinton owend and Shider used to visit. Years later, Clinton took Shider’s band, United Soul (or U.S.), under his wing and invited Shider to join P-Funk.

George Clinton was first inspired by the doo wop sound of the 50’s. He was interested in it so much he made it his lifetime career, becoming the creative force behind the groups Parliament and Funkadelic.
Although the groups began making music together in 1955, it wasn’t until 1969 that they began to create a buzz. Clinton, recording as both Parliament and Funkadelic, “revolutionized R&B during the seventies, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from Jimmy Hendrix, Frank Zappa, & Sly Stone.”
