George Clinton sues Black Eyed Peas for unlawfully using his music

Some people eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck in the coming year. However, the luck hasn’t rubbed off on the Black Eyed Peas band, as they rang in 2011 with a lawsuit from funk pioneer George Clinton.

Clinton filed a lawsuit against the band, including Fergie and will.i.am, and the label, Universal Music Group, for using parts if his 1979 song “(Not Just) Knee Deep” in the remixes of the B.E.P. song “Shut Up.”

“Shut Up” isn’t anything new, however. It first debuted in the band’s 2003 album Elephunk and the remix version came about later that year. The song was also used in the deluxe edition of the Peas’ 2009 album, The E.N.D.

George Clinton stated that he never gave them permission to use his music and is asking for copyright infringement damages as well as an injunction to block sales of the remix in the future.

P-Funk member Garry Shider dies

Longtime musical director of Parliament-Funkadelic and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Garry Shider died from cancer on June 16. He was 56.

The friendship and musical collaboration between Shider and George Clinton go back to the 1960s at a barbershop that Clinton owend and Shider used to visit. Years later, Clinton took Shider’s band, United Soul (or U.S.), under his wing and invited Shider to join P-Funk.

For more than 30 years, Shider worked with P-Funk, and was called the “core of the group” on the band’s official website.

“Aside from being the core of the group, the main conduit between George and the band, as well as one of the greatest guitarists, vocalists, and songwriters to have ever lived, Garry was the heart of the group, a perpetual family man, with a propensity for laughter, love, and happiness everywhere he went,” Clinton and P-Funk posted on the band’s website.

George Clinton was first inspired by the doo wop sound of the 50’s. He was interested in it so much he made it his lifetime career, becoming the creative force behind the groups Parliament and Funkadelic.

Although the groups began making music together in 1955, it wasn’t until 1969 that they began to create a buzz. Clinton, recording as both Parliament and Funkadelic, “revolutionized R&B during the seventies, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from Jimmy Hendrix, Frank Zappa, & Sly Stone.”

George was able to experience tremendous success performing with the groups, but in 1982 he broke up both bands and decided to focus on solo work. Since then he has released numerous albums and founded his own record label, The C Kunspyruhzy.
